The Department of Education is one of the oldest Departments of Dibrugarh University, which started functioning from 20th September 1965. It started with a teacher-training course called Bachelor of Teaching (B.T). Till 1968 the Department was known as the ‘Institute of Education’ and from 1968 it came to be known as the Department of Education with the same B.T. course. At present the B.T. course has been renamed as B.Ed w.e.f 1981-82 session. In 1969, the Department was shifted to its permanent Rajabheta Campus. The Department was raised to the status of “College of Teacher Education” (CTE) from 1st September, 1989. The Department introduced the M. Ed. Course from 1st September 1989 and three years later the liberal academic course of M.A. in Education was also initiated from 20th August, 1992. Presently the Department is offering 4 (four) academic programmes, viz. the two-year B. Ed, M. Ed and MA programme in Education and the Ph. D. Programme in Education. The Department is making significant contributions to the pedagogic improvement in the education scenario of the region.

The Department also carries on extension educational activities like organizing Orientation Courses, Short-term In-service Training Courses, Workshops etc. for Secondary School Teachers, UGC Refresher Course for College and University Teachers, etc.

The Department of Education now has its own new Assam-type building and all the classes and activities of the Department are now conducted in the new building. The Department of Education has a Departmental Library, as well as a small Canteen of its own, within its campus. It is in fact a vibrant Department full of life with young people carrying out various types of activities in and outside the classroom.
